The cork oak (Quercus Suber L) grows in extensive areas in the Mediterranean. This wonderful tree owes its long lifespan of sometimes 200 years, to its unique ability to renew: the harvested bark gives a versatile fiber for endless purposes, while the tree is now on its next 9 year cycle until the new harvest!

The use of cork keeps the cork forests (Montadas) in Portugal well managed by people who have built up enormous know-how over the centuries.
Cork oaks from which the bark is extracted even absorb 3 to 5 times more CO2 than cork oaks from which the bark is not harvested!
The cork forests form a world-unique eco-system.
